Hello, this is team Japan. The topic of June is performance cases through linking ESG&public democracy, so we're going to report about japan's cases.
First, I'll introduce about ESG. ESG refers to the three key factors (environmental, social, governance) when measuring the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment in a business or company. There is the relationship between ESG and Public Diplomacy. Recently, in public diplomacy, “attractive diplomacy that wins the other people’s heart” and “standard diplomacy that sets an example for everyone” are being emphasized. And ESG, which values non-financial indicators, is in line with the latest trend in public diplomacy in that companies can become an example of society and win customer’s heart if they comply with ESG. So ESG is drawing attention as an agenda in the public domain in that it reminds people of the need for state administration that contributes to the universal interests of mankind beyond narrow national interests.
Japanese companies are synchronizing mid-to long-term business growth and ESG management and responding quickly to environmental changes. Thanks to this efforts, there are many successful results in various japan's companies.
First case is Mitsubisi corporation. Mitsubish realized three values of economy, society, and environment at the same time through project, which called The medium-term Management Strategy 2021. Mitsubish's performance cases is as follows : First, in Environment, the recycling amount of food waste increased significantly in 2019, and the recycling rate of the headquarters building was 100%, achieving the 'Zero Mission Office' goal. In Social, They have achieved the target rate of female managers in 2020(10.0%) in 2018. And international certification rates and production related to palm oil, salmon farming and forests have increased. Finally, in governance, it meets the requirements of independent executives set by the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the criteria for appointing outside executives set by Mitsubishi Corporation itself.
SONY Group obtained a leader rating in corporate culture as a result of installation a hotline to report corporate ethics violations. Fujitsu, which operates a system that rewards affiliates and departments that have achieved results in the development of eco-friendly technologies, got a good score on clean technology. ITOCHU Corporation operates an employee's health management center, and thanks to this, it ranked first in ESG evaluation and scored well in health and safety. KDDI Corporation, which earned an excellent grade in privacy and data protection, are making efforts to quickly find and apply international standards and issues. Sumitomo Chemical Company is the only Japanese company that has received the ESG Evaluation Award (AAA) to receive an excellent grade in carbon emissions. They promised 2050 carbon neutrality and announced that they have no plans to participate in new coal-fired power projects.
